We are committed to doing our part to DRY ICE, which is our national NAACP campaign addressing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), by joining The Oranges Community Coalition. The coalition includes The HUUB, Laundry Workers Center, UofOrange, FAITH+WORKS UU Congregation of Orange, Ebenezer Baptist Church, West Orange Aiding Neighbors, St Matthew AME, NAACP: Oranges & Maplewood Branch, Mt Olives Church of God, Friends of Metcalf Park, Hispano Mano a Mano, RM Motivation, and H.O.C.A.S..
ICE activity has only continued to escalate. ICE has reported the detention of 108 residents of Orange, 51 residents of East Orange, and 15 residents of West Orange. We are confident these numbers are significant undercounts, but even if we take them at face value as reported by the government, it is still devastating.
The grief, rage, and frustration in our communities is reaching a breaking point. What’s more - we know from the documented literature on Mass Incarceration the kind of long-term damage disappearing members of our community at this rate will have for our entire society.
Now is the time for solidarity - both with Orange’s immigrant communities and for the sake of our whole society. We invite everyone to get involved in our Week of Action to Melt ICE.
On Saturday, November 7th, 11AM - 2PM, stand up and join your neighbors in a Community March Against ICE! Beginning at 11 AM at West Orange Town Hall, we will march along Main Street, stopping at West Orange, City of Orange, and East Orange town halls to demand municipal legislation providing comprehensive codified protection, clear directives to municipal police departments empowering them to protect all residents, and prompt executive action to kick all of the demands into quick effect.
Together we affirm that ICE is NOT Orange - We are a city made great by the life, culture, and labor of people from Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Trinidad, Ghana, Senegal, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, the Deep South, and every other place folks have migrated from. Orange is the world - and ICE is a deep violation of our ethos and history. We come together to say ICE out of Orange - ICE out of NJ. ICE out PERIOD. Human rights don’t have borders.
